You see, people coming from Windows and who know absolutely nothing about Linux think that the latter is just one OS. So, when they find more than 300 distributions, they do not know which one to choose. Thus, they feel intimidated by variety. Of course, that happens when they have no one to guide them.
I like your term "distro hoping" :) and you are right; it's GREAT FUN!Mechatotorohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15816943718402270287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1514795258871703434.post-64532989451065914562010-07-25T15:10:24.074-06:002010-07-25T15:10:24.074-06:00Microsoft's Steve Ballmer stated in a sharehol...Microsoft's Steve Ballmer stated in a shareholder's meeting that it's (MSFT) biggest competitor was Linux. Whether it's a multi-developer (red-hat, Mandriva, etc.) or just 2 developers (Peppermint), it is the perfect distro since everything in Linux can be self customized (even the branding).pjcolonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17783543137296676809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1514795258871703434.post-1687511125541900332010-07-25T14:35:54.946-06:002010-07-25T14:35:54.946-06:00I don't know how anyone, except someone with m...I don't know how anyone, except someone with mental health issues, can be "scared by variety". It's like going to buy new sneakers and being disturbed and disappointed that there's 80 models in the store to choose from, instead of 1. That just doesn't hold water. People want variety. That's one of the strengths of Linux.

That many of those varieties are not very good that's another problem. But there's also the myth that a distro "must be supported by a company to be reliable". Also not true. As for distro hopping... well I call it "distro hoping" :) Hoping to find that perfect distro, that is. Anyway I've stopped doing that, but I do test almost everything new that comes out. It's great fun.Llewtonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1514795258871703434.post-27278072733573547782010-07-24T21:40:39.753-06:002010-07-24T21:40:39.753-06:00That idea of handling different OSs as a potential...That idea of handling different OSs as a potential job skill is true...Inevitably, that is bound to happen. Those who see their "Windows-only" advocacy as an advantage someday will be at a great disadvantage...the world is changing!Megatotorohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02268018256762186695noreply@blogger.com
